Most homeowners assume old carpet is destined for the landfill, but there's more to the story. As flooring experts in Lexington, KY, Plaza Carpets understands the importance of responsible carpet disposal and the options available to homeowners looking to update their flooring.

Breaking the myth about carpet waste

Carpet materials vary significantly, which directly impacts their recyclability. Most residential carpets contain synthetic fibers like nylon, polyester, or polypropylene, along with backing materials and adhesives. This complex composition presents unique challenges for recycling, but solutions do exist.

The carpet recycling process

When carpet reaches the end of its lifecycle, specialized facilities can process it into valuable materials. Here's what happens to recyclable carpet components:

Carpet fibers are separated and processed into plastic pellets for manufacturing new products
Backing materials can be transformed into composite lumber or used in cement production
Foam padding is often repurposed into carpet cushioning or other foam products
Metal components like tack strips are sorted and sent to metal recycling facilities
